Data corruption is the unintended modification of a file or the loss of information that usually occurs during reading or writing. The reason could be hardware or software malfunction, and as a consequence, a file can become partially or entirely corrupted, so it'll no longer function properly since its bits will be scrambled or lacking. An image file, for instance, will no longer display an accurate image, but a random combination of colors, an archive will be impossible to unpack since its content will be unreadable, etcetera. When this kind of a problem occurs and it is not recognized by the system or by an administrator, the data will become corrupted silently and when this happens on a disk drive which is a part of a RAID array where the information is synced between different drives, the corrupted file will be replicated on all other drives and the damage will become permanent. A large number of frequently used file systems either do not offer real-time checks or do not have good ones which will detect an issue before the damage is done, so silent data corruption is a rather common matter on web hosting servers where substantial volumes of information are stored.

No Data Corruption & Data Integrity in Shared Hosting

In case you host your websites in a shared hosting account from our company, you won't have to worry about any of your data ever getting damaged. We can ensure that since our cloud hosting platform works with the amazing ZFS file system. The aforementioned is the only file system that works with checksums, or unique digital fingerprints, for each and every file. Any kind of data that you upload will be saved in a RAID i.e. simultaneously on a large number of SSDs. All of the file systems synchronize the files between the different drives using such a setup, but there is no real guarantee that a file will not get corrupted. This could occur at the time of the writing process on each drive and then a damaged copy can be copied on the other drives. What is different on our platform is the fact that ZFS compares the checksums of all files on all of the drives immediately and in the event that a corrupted file is discovered, it's replaced with a good copy with the correct checksum from some other drive. That way, your info will continue to be intact no matter what, even if an entire drive fails.

No Data Corruption & Data Integrity in Semi-dedicated Servers

If you get one of our semi-dedicated server solutions, you won't need to worry about silent file corruption since we use ZFS - a high level file system which checks all of the files in real time. Every time you upload a file to your website hosting account, ZFS will assign a unique digital fingerprint to it - the so-called checksum. The file will be synced between a couple of SSD drives for redundancy, so if a drive fails, the other ones will take control. ZFS compares the checksum of all copies on the different drives and if it detects a corrupted copy, it replaces it with a healthy one from another drive. This happens in real time, so there will be no danger for any part of your content at any time. By comparison, all the other file systems carry out checks only after a system failure, but since they don't use anything similar to the checksums which ZFS uses, they cannot detect silently corrupted files, so a bad copy may be replicated on the rest of the drives as well and you could lose precious information. Because this is not the case with ZFS, we guarantee the integrity of every single file you upload no matter what.
